Making limited chances count
Charleston’s September 22 trip to South Carolina produced a striking contrast: the Gamecocks had 20 shots, the Cougars had five, and Charleston left with a 2–1 win.
Stian Bendvold scored both Charleston goals, giving the program its first victory over a team ranked No. 1. His opener arrived in the 28th minute; his second came at 84:55, breaking a tie that had lasted since just before halftime. Charleston finished with two shots on target, both of them goals.
There was an immediate reminder that a signature result does not settle a season. Charleston lost 2–1 to UNCW on September 27, leaving the Cougars 5–2–2 overall. Arnau Ollé’s equalizer was followed by another Seahawks goal in the 78th minute. Charleston’s next scheduled test is at Campbell on October 3.
AthleMix analysis: read beyond shot totals
Shot volume describes how often a team attempts to score. It cannot, by itself, explain the quality of those opportunities or the decisions that created them.
Bendvold’s performance makes this a worthwhile match to revisit. For an attacker, the question is how to remain ready when opportunities are limited. For a defender, it is what happens in the few moments when an opponent does find a route through.
For recruits researching a college environment, both games belong in the picture: the ceiling shown against a top-ranked opponent and the challenge of producing again.
