Starts during a crowded spring schedule and a summer derby appearance show how the defender’s role is developing in 2026.

Called into the rotation
Kenny Nielsen’s 2026 story at LAFC has unfolded through different kinds of assignments. On April 11, he made his first MLS start of the season at Portland as Marc Dos Santos rotated the lineup ahead of a Concacaf match. On May 2, he was again part of a heavily changed side when LAFC recovered from two goals down to draw 2–2 at San Diego.
Those appearances put a practical shape around his place in the squad. For a developing defender, opportunity can arrive when a club needs to balance competitions and protect minutes elsewhere. Being ready for those shifts is part of the job, even when the final score tells only a fraction of an individual player’s story.
Another kind of assignment
By July 17, Nielsen’s task was different. He replaced debutant Yevhen Cheberko after 75 minutes in LAFC’s 3–0 away victory over the Galaxy, adding a derby appearance to his season.
The route to those minutes began with LAFC selecting him 57th overall from Georgetown in the 2024 SuperDraft. He then moved through LAFC2 before reaching the first team. His current chapter is about turning that pathway into repeat opportunities. The evidence is in the assignments themselves: a league start during rotation, another demanding road fixture and time on the field in a rivalry match.
